Kindo partnered with Parallo to create a more scalable platform on AWS, with an approach designed to minimise risk and maintain availability.
Partnering for Success
Kindo’s mission is simple: make life easier for families and schools. Its platform takes the friction out of everyday school administration, from payments and forms to permission slips, making reliability and performance critical to the experience it provides.
As Kindo grew, its technology environment was beginning to feel the pressure. Slow downs at key times presented a particular challenge for a platform handling payments, where customers expect services to be available and responsive when they need them.
Kindo partnered with Parallo to create a more scalable platform on AWS, with an approach designed to minimise migration risk and maintain service availability throughout the transition.
Building confidence before making the move
The project began with a proof of concept, giving Kindo confidence in the proposed approach before committing to the wider migration. A critical part of the project involved migrating Kindo’s data using AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), enabling real-time data synchronisation from the outset and ensuring the data was ready when it came time to cut over.
The wider migration involved moving Kindo from Windows to Linux, requiring fundamental changes across parts of its codebase. After three months of migration work, the new environment went live at a critical time for Kindo’s customers, with zero downtime.
For Kindo, that was an important measure of success. The platform needed to become more scalable without disrupting the families and schools already relying on it.
More than a technology migration
The benefits extended beyond infrastructure. With a platform better able to scale, Kindo’s development team could also work more quickly and continue delivering improvements without disrupting the service.
As part of the migration, Parallo implemented Datadog to provide more real-time monitoring and alerting across the environment. This has given Kindo greater visibility into platform performance and the ability to identify potential issues before they affect customers. “Since the migration, we’ve been able to leverage that to know about issues before our customers do. So this has been huge for us", says Simon.
Creating room for what comes next
With the migration complete, Kindo has a stronger technology foundation for the next stage of its roadmap. The team is now looking at opportunities to unlock more value from its data, expand into other markets and continue developing the platform.
Working with Parallo, AWS and Datadog also gives Kindo access to additional expertise and resources as those plans develop, allowing its internal team to keep its focus on creating better experiences for schools and families.
As Kindo puts it, the outcome isn’t simply the technical ability to scale. It’s about unlocking the potential of the team to deliver more quickly, without disrupting the service customers rely on.
